Lochcarron is set amidst magnificent West Highland mountain scenery, and there are numerous places to visit within easy travelling distance.

To the north and west are the Torridon Hills, always a favourite area for walkers and climbers, and the Beinn Eighe Nature Reserve; also, the beautiful Applecross Peninsula, approached via the Bealach na Ba, the Pass of the Cattle, one of the highest roads in Britain. The photo to the right shows the view down towards Kishorn from the Applecross tops. A little further away are Loch Maree and Gairloch, with its lovely white sandy beaches.

To the south and west are Loch Alsh, Eilean Donan Castle, and the magnificent scenery of Kintail and Glenelg; also Kyle of Lochalsh and the new Skye Bridge.

Nearer to Lochcarron are the very pretty villages of Shieldaig and Plockton, the latter having palm trees growing along the water front, to the surprise of many people. This is an indication of the normally quite temperate climate in this area, thanks to the effects of the Gulf Stream.

There is a wide choice of walks in the Lochcarron area, to suit all tastes, from short strolls to ambitious hill walks. Those who are willing to expend a little energy gaining height are rewarded with even more magnificent vistas!

For those who want a more leisurely way of viewing the scenery, the rail journey between Kyle of Lochalsh and Inverness takes a lot of beating. The photo opposite was taken from the line side on the south side of Loch Carron (the mountains in the far distance are the Cuillins on Skye).

The nearest station is at Strathcarron, 3 miles away.
